CHAPTER SIXTEEN

After getting dressed, the couple went down to make breakfast and talk about the reason Seth contacted her. Vikkas knew his wife was clearly upset by the phone call. He'd give Milan a few minutes to get her thoughts together.

They sat down to a delicious meal of southwestern omelets, sliced fruit, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Not too much talking happened while the couple ate. It was a comfortable silence. As soon as the dishes were gathered up and placed in the dishwasher, Milan allowed Vikkas to lead her into the living room.

Taking a deep breath, she shared what her brother told her during their brief phone call. Her husband listened, while keeping her hands enclosed in his as a form of sharing strength. Tears began streaming down her face.

He watched as she wrestled with her thoughts. For these few seconds, he knew that she needed silent support. Giving her a moment to process what she was feeling.

“Baby, it's okay if you are sad about what is happening with your mother,” Vikkas said. “I know her behavior towards you has been messed up, from an early age. But it's fine to have empathy for this situation.”

“She doesn't deserve that from me,” Milan whispered. “Why should I even care?”

“Because that woman is your mother. God choose her to bring you into this world and that was a gift. It's on her that she didn't cherish or act right towards you. But it doesn't change the lifetime connection between the two of you.”

His wife didn't respond. Patience was one of his strong characteristics. Knowing her all of these years, Vikkas was able to gauge when it was time to speak.

After a few minutes, when Milan had chosen to be quiet again, he said, “we can call the hospital and check on your mother's current status. As much as I'd like to believe Seth is being straight with you about this, we need to check things out before making any plans.”

“I would hope that my wayward brother is being up front with me,” she replied. “I agree that we need to know all the facts before making reservations.”

“Okay, sweetheart. Let's contact some folks and then we'll go from there. Are you ready to do that?”

Welcoming his sweet kiss, Milan shook her head that she was ready to make the necessary calls. She wasn't surprised about not hearing from any of her other siblings. Those relationships were strained a long time ago.

Prior to them getting married, Vikkas laid down the law with her family members. Many of them knew what happened with Seth and they didn't want a similar outcome. Besides that, everyone was well aware of the Castle and the men who were in charge. Foolishness and recklessness were not tolerated, especially when it came to those under their protection.

As the couple headed to his home office, he trailed behind in order to make a phone call to Daron. He made sure their discussion was brief, but informative. Knowing that the tech savvy guru would check everything and everyone out in Chicago made him feel at ease.
